Here Comes the Girl Scouts!

The book tells the story of Juliette Gordon Low, Daisy for short, who was the founder of the Girl Scouts. This is my first fully illustrated book and I could not have been luckier to have had all the help, patience and support from the team at Scholastic~ Tracy Mack, Marijka Kostiw and Emellia Zamani.

The text from author and editor Shana Corey is a careful mix of information and fun language that gave me lots of ideas to work from. She's published many titles and just has a knack for compelling storytelling.

Like I said, a august group to work with.

I learned so much, I hope to be able to do it again sometime. I would love to write my own and am working on some ideas, but in the meantime I'm thrilled that this is finally out in the world.

Denver Post on 'the weight of things' exhibit

	Kyle MacMillan:

Although she makes her living as an illustrator for an array of national magazines and newspapers, Jill Hadley Hooper also has enjoyed a distinguished career as one of Denver's top fine artists.

Eight of her recent 67-inch-square paintings — each offering loosely rendered, trace-like views of furniture she has inherited — are on view in "The Weight of Things," a handsome exhibition at Goodwin/Fine Art, 1255 Delaware St.

"I wanted the paintings to honor the straightforwardness of the objects," Hooper said. "These aren't Eames chairs. They are just things that great-grandparents and grandparents earned or acquired as emblems of status in the middle class."

These paintings do not achieve the same emotional power as some of the works in her 2006 show, "In the Between," which had a poetic, enigmatic quality that is missing in these more direct, less-elusive paintings.

That said, these are still strong works, which are enhanced by Hooper's nuanced surface effects, which she achieves by painstakingly sanding down the surfaces and employing an inventive range of relief printing techniques.

Westword's Michael Paglia on 'the weight of things' exhibit

	Michael Paglia:

The current show at Goodwin is The Weight of Things: Jill Hadley Hooper, showcasing the well-known Denver artist's newest series of paintings. Hooper, who runs the gallery atIronton, is not only a painter, but also a book illustrator, and she has built a national reputation with her work. The paintings at Goodwin depict some recently acquired heirlooms and other family pieces. Using oil-based printing inks and crayons applied to birch panels, Hooper creates a ground that comprises blocky, semi-geometric shapes. Then she inserts lyrical depictions of these inherited pieces, mostly furniture, in the center of the picture plane.

	The rest is here!
